CARNIVOROUS PLANTS – PART II

                      CEPHALOTUS

 

It´s a small growing plant . The insectivorous leaves are small and green.

 

        VENUS  FLYTRAP

It´s a plant that catched and digest insects.Its trapping is forming by the terminal portion of each leaves and is triggered by their hairs. When the insects craw along the leaves come in contact with one or more the hairs twice in succession , the trap close.

   DROCERA

 Called also Sundews. This plant capture and digest insects using stalked mucilaginous gland covering their leaf’s surface. It´s a perennial herbaceous plant.

 

                                                                                                              DROSOPHYLLUM

It´s native from Portugal ,Spain and Morocco. It´s one of the few carnivorous plant to grow in dry-soil. It has glandular leaves -has a sweet smell to attract insects that stuck to the mucilage secreted by the glands on the leaves. The plant then secreted enzymes which dissolves the insect and release the nutrients which are absorbs by the plant.

GENLISEA

Find it in Madagascar ,Africa and Brazil. is unique for specializing in protozoa and for attracting its prey chemically. Are terrestrial and semi aquatics plants.Has a single stem with small basal rosettes leaves and a single flower yellow or purple.They have underground traps. Are thin tubes joined in an inverted V shape, with spiral grooves down their lengths that allow the entered of invertebrates.

PINGUICULA

 This plant use sticky ,glandular leaves to trap insects and digest it. Are native from Europe ,North America ,Asia ,South and Central America.

 

RAFLESSIA ARNOLDI

 

It´s the biggest flower in the world. It has five petals , it´s a carnivorous plant with 3.28 ft diameter and 22.5 lbs.weight. See more information -raflessia

 NEPHENTES

It´s a plant that takes more of their nutrients from trapping and consuming animals. The traps are derived from a simple rolled leaf whose margin have sealed together. This plant it´s from South America.

 

HELIAMPHORA CHIMATENSIS

Are from Venezuela. Are carnivorous plants that consist of a modified leaf form with tubular shape. It does not produce enzymes that allows digestion relying instead on the enzymes of symbiotic bacteria to break down their prey.

 

 DARLINGTONIA CALIFORNICA

It´s native from north California and Oregon. Growing in bogs with cold running water. It´s also called cobra lily for its look. Don´t produce enzymes relies one symbiotic bacteria and protozoa to break down the capture insects into easily nutrients.

             BROCCHINIA REDUCTA

It´s native from Venezuela and Guyana and it´s found in poor soil.The leaves surrounding the cup are coated with loose ,waxy scales. The scales are reflective of ultraviolet light insects are attracted to ultraviolet . The water in the cup emits a sweet odor which serve to attract insects. Does not produce enzymes but produce bacteria.

                                                   BYBLIS 

It´s a small carnivorous plant called also rainbow plant for the attractive appearance of their mucilage covered leaves in bright sunshine. The surface of the leaves secrete a mucilaginous substance to attract insects. The insects die for asphyxia as the mucilage envelops them. The leaves also are equipped with glands ,which are responsible for the secretion of digestive juice.

CATOPSIS BERTERORIANA

 

You can find it in South Florida to Brazil.Generally grows on the shaded areas, it traps insect in its tank .

CEROXYLON QUINDINUENSE

 

It´s the tallest palm in the world. We can find them in the Colombian Andes. Actually is the national tree from Colombia. Also called the wax palm . Grows up to 164 ft tall  not only is the tallest palm  but the tallest monocot in the world.The leaves are dark green with a petiole up to 6.56 ft . The trunk is cylindrical and covered with wax. Can live  a 100 years  and it is a slow grown plant.

CORYPHA UMBRACULIFERA

 

Is the most inflorescence plant. Can reach 29.53 ft tall and 9.84 ft wide and has 24.000.000 of flowers. When fruits appears the palm died . It´s from Southern India.

ELAEIS GUINENSIS

Has the biggest compound fruit in the world. The fruit are 55.12 lbs and it´s compouse d for 4ooo oil fruit. It´s appreciate for it´s oil. The palm is from Malaysia

 

 

LODOICEA MALDIVICA

 

 Has the biggest fruit. It can weight

66.14 lbs. Mature in 30 years . This palm also has the biggest seed.

 

 

PHYTELEPHAS MACROCARPA

 

Is the hardest seed in the world . The seed is called marfil vegetable and it´s use to make ,rings,plates,etc.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

SOCRATEA EXORRHIZA(WALKING PALM)

 

The palm grows in Central America and South America . It can grow 82 ft in high. It has unusual roots . This roots allow the palm to walk away from the point of germination if another tree falls and knocks it over. Also walks if need it to reach the sunny area.

TAHINA SPECTABILIS- SUICIDAL PALM

     

It´s      from    Madagascar . It´s a new species. Has a solitary trunk ,which holds a giant crown that flowers only once in its life with a spectacular white inflorescence that forms from the center of the crown. When the fruits matured tha palm dies     

HYOPHORBE LAGENICAULIS- BOTTLE PALM   

This palm grows slowly to a high of 10 to 20 ft. The trunk is rounded bulge in young specimens and gradually elongates.   A small crown consisting of 4 to 8 pinnate leaves. CORYPHIA TALIERA

It´s a species of palm native from South Asia. There is one plant left in Bangladesh. It´s a extinct in the wild species.

 

 

 

PRITCHARDIA MUNROi

 

It´s a flowering plant. This species is only found on the Main Island, with only two individuals left in the wild.

 

 

WOLLEMIA

It´s a coniferous tree that was discovered in Australia in 1994. There is only one in the world.Was universally dubbed the wollemia tree. although it is not a true pine.

The oldest fossil of wollemia has been dated to 200 million years ago. It´s an evergreen reaching 80-112 feet tall.

The name is taken from the park where  the tree is living now.

 

PHOENIX DACTYLIFERA

This palm species is the highest palm reaches 65.6 feet tall.

It´s the palm that produce more along its life. Leaves 400 years and produce 165 lbs of datils per year. The leaves are the largest in the palm world , are 82 feet large and 16,4 feet wide. This palm has a female and a masculine tree. Female palms has yellow flowers and produce datils. The masculine palm has white flowers and don´t produce datils.

MEXICAN GARDEN STYLE

Mexican garden are about the joy of outdoor living. In Mexico gardens are designed to be lived. Gardens are perfect oasis behind walls where families celebrates with friends. In a Mexican patio or garden you can find cactus,jasmines,roses and tropical palms.

MEDITERRANEAN GARDENS

It´s a formal garden with palms, yuccas, Cordyline, aloes in the company of other trees an shrubs, associated with groupings of terracotta pots.

TROPICAL GARDEN STYLE

This kind of gardens have fountains , lakes or swimming pool and tropical plants.Requires good rainfall.The plants have very large leaves ,small trees and shrubs that created a dense garden.Plants that can be used are Algerian ivy,canera,Passiflora,screcia.

PAZO GALLEGO GARDEN STYLE

It´s a garden with defensive towers,at the entrance. The towers shown us that we are in an   area of specials gardens with giant shade created with banana trees, walnut trees,eucalyptus. All these trees are in two rows bordered a stoned road that tell us at the entrance that the garden is made up of two different groups of plants.  Are aristocratic  rural houses.

PATIO ANDALUZ GARDEN STYLE

It´s an inside garden with fruit trees , terracotta pots with bright colours (majolica)and  fountains .The patio floor is very important and they used colourful  tiles.

MODERN GARDEN STYLE -

This type of gardens are clean with serene look. T he lines are similar to those use in formal gardens. They are based in geometrically shapes with straight or angular lines. In this gardens plants are low maintenance surrounding walkway .Plants selection usually is the last thing to considered.

NATURIST  GAUDIN GARDEN STYLE -

There were developed in France after world war I. G. Risler and J. Siegfred  were founder of the Association Française des Cités Jardins. They were influenced by Howards book (Britain). Usually Gaudin create gardens with ornamental elements, and the planing area has tunnels. He used pots with plants in different levels and including  spray irrigation systems to water the plants.

RATIONALIST FUNCTIONAL GARDENS -

This gardens are planing basing in the idea of  Urbanism ,planification and design. It began in Germany . They used volume, geometrical and they don´t used ornamental elements. The garden were simple with volume.

ECLECTIC GARDEN STYLE -

Have large grassy areas with creative and functional spaces.

ARCHITECTURAL GARDEN STYLE -

It´s the art of composing land form, water vegetation, buildings, paving and climate in a good outdoor space. It´s the relation between a building and it´s surroundings . The architectural plants are most evergreen large, woody plants.

ABSTRACT  GARDEN STYLE -

Are inspired in the abstract geometry of modern art. Cubism it´s the influence on garden design. They considered with abstract shapes and patches of colour.

PICTORIAL GARDEN STYLE

This garden is created looking the relation between painting, architecture and sculpture. The results are gardens with forms and colors arranged without a specific order , based only on the gardeners creativity

FUTURISTIC GARDEN STYLE

Was created in Italy. It´s based on the construction of artificial and abstract landscapes. Plastic flowers with brilliant colors and fragrant smell. Sculptures with cubes, cones and pyramids forms.

JAPANESE GARDEN STYLE

EGYPTIAN GARDEN STYLE

Those garden seemed like a collection of herbs or wild flowers. Trees and shrubs were grown for  shade  and for their fruits , pomegranate,palms,olives. They had an enclosed yard with few fruit trees, to zoological gardens with ponds,fishes etc. See more gardens

PERSIAN GARDEN STYLE

The TAJ MA HAL is one of the largest Persian gardens of the world.Also, the ALHAMBRA in Spain shows the influence of Persian gardens. Sunlight and his effects were important to the design.,textures and shapes were specifically chosen to harness the light. They integrate indoors and outdoors by arches between both,  to open up the division.

Water was an important element in their gardens.

HEBREW GARDEN STYLE

The first Hebrew garden we are heard about is the Eden garden in the Genesis book. The garden were located in a geographical area with four rivers. Was a place for human love and sexuality. It had fruit tress, animals and there were placed the tree of life and the tree of knowledge.

It´s usual that gardens are a symbol of their religion and culture.

GREEK GARDEN STYLE

In Crete was the first place to developed Greek gardens. They love flowers and plants and we can see it in all the draws or paintings the did. The wild flowers cover Greece, bulbs and orchids colour the ground. They have fruits trees in their gardens as well as vegetables.

NEOCLASSIC GARDEN STYLE

In this kind of gardens they used principles of balance and symmetry.

( 17Th.century) usually used cypress trees and statues. The most famous neoclassic gardens are in France. These gardens are influence by roman and Greeks gardens.

ROMANTIC GARDEN STYLE

Are usually found in soft colors pink, lavender,yellow and white. Lilies of the valley are good spring blooming perennials. Hibiscus blooms in later summer. Is your garden is in shade used summer music and old glory -hillside black beauty.

Softening edges with coral bulbs or lady´s moth. Long blooming Gaura with long stems lined with small flowers. You can lead the way with this plant, to a bench. Check you garden for areas open to moonlight . White flowers and silver foliage glow under the moonlight. If we need a wall used trees and shrubs to make it. A pergola can add an intimate feeling. Fragrant bouquet and guacamole add fragrance to the place.

This garden must be a place where every moment will became a memorable one.

GARDEN STYLES

We were talking about how we can design our own garden- see garden design-. Here we are going to Shaw you different  garden styles in order to help you with your garden idea.

MEDIEVAL ROMAN GARDENS

These gardens are inspired on Greek gardens.The garden was a place of peace , a refuge from urban life and a place with symbolic meanings. They were separated into three parts. The first part or xystus was a terrace  that served as an open air drawing room. Has variety of flowers and trees., statues, herbs and water.

HISPANIC- ARABIC GARDEN

This garden was an enclosed court-garden. They were either shut in by buildings or high walls . It has at least one fountain , the paths are often paved with costly marble, or shaded with vines. The beds are bordered with stones. Arabs used extravagantly flowers. The Hispanic-Arabic garden was divided by walls , often arranged in the classic fourfold pattern which served both as walkways as an aqueducts to carry the water for irrigation. ITALIAN RENAISSANCE GARDEN

This garden were inspirited in roman gardens. They were design for contemplation and pleasure, with tunnels and  greenery , trees for shade

and  a secret garden.

FRENCH BAROQUE GARDENS

Are gardens with lawns, hedges,walkways and statues arranged in geometrical patterns. Has an Italian influences, with fountains and

flowerbeds.

ENGLISH LANDSCAPE GARDEN

This garden presented an idealized view of nature, often inspired by paintings of landscapes. Usually included a lake ,sweeps of gently rolling lawns  set  against groves of trees.

COUNTRY GARDEN

Traditional country garden has useful plants that could be eaten or use by some other means.Generally the garden has ornamental plants and accessories as well as useful plants like herbs, vegetables, fruits that offer a

colourful display of smells.

INDOOR PLANTS – PART II

We continue with indoor plants…….

CHAMAEDOREA

Likes zones with bright, indirect light.

CHINESE EVERGREEN

Low light lover. The leaves are a blend of silvery gray and dark green. Don´t put to much water. Allow the soil to dry between watering.

PONY TAIL PALM

Requires high light levels. It has an unusual ability to store water in the trunk. It can grow up to a year without water.

LADY PALM

They adapted to a wide range of climates , soils and environments. It´s produce prolific rhizomes . The propagation is by division. Seeds occasionally available.

MOON GLOW

Admire for its tough nature, has deep green leaves with gold margins.

DRACAENA MASSANGEANA

Also called Brazilian trunk. Bright direct light is bud for the plant as low light. You must put a piece of trunk without leaves in water and when roots appears you can place it into a pot. It does not need to much water.

WATERMELON PEPEROMIA

It´s an evergreen low maintenance plant. Foliage color dark green and silver to cream. It needs heat,humidity and partial shade.

APIDISTRA

Prefer to be just moist in higher light and much dryer in low light. Tolerates low humidity levels.

SCHEFFLERA

This plant is easy to grow and propagate. Don´t like direct light. Propagates from cuttings. Don´t bother to root it in water, put it in the pot with wet soil and don´t forget to water it.
